Scottish Thistle Awards 2001 - Flavour of Scotland

Winner - Monachyle Mhor Hotel
Monachyle Mhor Hotel is a small family run hotel and restaurant overlooking Loch Voil and Loch Doine in the Brae of Balquidder.


Their entry demonstrated a commitment to the principles of the Natural Cooking of Scotland and the supporting evidence and site visit showed that they are being put into practice.

Finalist - Let''s Eat

Let''s Eat understands the importance of relationships with local suppliers in running a consistently successful restaurant, enabling them to provide fresh, first class produce for their diners. The quality of ingredients is imperative, in order to support their strong philosophy of bringing out the optimum flavour and textures of the ingredients, combined with uncomplicated, clean and simple presentation. This entry also demonstrated a clearly focussed and unequivocal commitment to the principles of the Natural Cooking of Scotland.

Finalist - Loch Lomond Trading Company Ltd at the Coach House Coffee Shop
Gary and Rowena Groves saw the need for a quality coffee shop in Luss and opened the Coach House Coffee Shop 1998 . Since then the business has expanded, is open 7 days a week, all year round and employs 8 full time and 15 seasonal staff. Gary and Rowena are totally committed to using high quality, fresh, Scottish produce, and have developed excellent links with local suppliers. Their business has not only met but exceeded targets in its first three years of trading and the judges commend Gary and Rowena for their commitment to the Natural Cooking of Scotland approach and the benefits that they have accrued as a result.

Award Description
Natural Cooking of Scotland is a business development initiative with the aim of improving the quality of food available to visitors to Scotland.

Entries are invited from restaurants, hotels, tea rooms, pubs - in fact all sectors of the hospitality industry who have used quality produce to drive their business forward. 

The judges are looking for evidence of Scottish produce being well-cooked and presented within a welcoming and customer-friendly environment. 

Most importantly, they will want to know how businesses are bringing in more customers as a result of adopting the Natural Cooking of Scotland approach.
