Scottish Thistle Awards 2001 - Travel Journalism
Winner - Tom Bruce-Gardyne
With a circulation of 400,000 the Sunday Telegraph published two travel features written
by Edinburgh journalist Tom Bruce-Gardyne. These articles featured a weekend in Glasgow and a stay in
the Tower of Hallbar, near Lanark, a 16th century tower converted into a holiday home by the Vivat Trust.
These articles displayed not only an extremely high standard of travel writing, but a genuine enthusiasm
which makes the reader want to visit these places.
Tom's
articles were written in July 2000 and April 2001, after his own visits. The features were awash with
accurate facts, which he managed to combine with a beautiful narrative that was both descriptive and
beautifully balanced.
Finalist
-
Franc Nichele: ''Atmospheres'' Magazine
This article was written for the October 2000 edition of this high quality French lifestyle
magazine and focused on the pleasures of autumn in the Grampian Highlands. Franc Nichele gives us a
walk around the region, which summarises, to him, the identity and atmosphere of Scotland. The article
was beautifully crafted in a way which captured the atmosphere of the area - from Aberdeen to Castle
Fraser and Fyvie Castle - and brought the history and its legends to life. The use of photography was
stunning and the information for the would-be traveller was excellently documented.
Finalist - Scotland's Larder
Transmitted to an audience of more than 400,000 this entry was a mouth watering look
at the upsurge of interest in food on Skye. As a programme, Scotland's Larder looks at the food we
eat and the stories behind it by visiting locations all over the country. This television feature focused
on the fantastic local produce available in Skye and how local businesses were exploiting it to bring
the highest standards to tables throughout the island. The programme was well-researched and focused
on examples of businesses who had worked to create their own local flavour. The creative filming of
the subject matter also captured the natural environment magnificently.
