Scottish Thistle Awards 2000 - Skills for Success - Large Company

Winner - Jarvis Hotels plc
Jarvis Hotels plc demonstrated a comprehensive approach and an innovative solution to the improvement and effectiveness of induction training for staff. With over 900 employees, they have addressed the primary issue of how to guarantee the consistent delivery of high quality induction training to a large number of staff with different learning styles and training requirements. Parallel to this was the aim of ensuring understanding of what the business is trying to achieve in pursuit of customer satisfaction and the role each individual plays in achieving this aim. The introduction of an innovative multi-media system throughout the company was well-planned and supported and continues to develop, providing an excellent benchmark for this type of training.

Finalist - The Gleneagles Tailored Awards
The Gleneagles Tailored Awards have been developed as a nationally recognised qualification in the delivery of excellent customer service standards. The Tailored Awards facilitate retention of staff, encouraging multi-skilling, improving staff motivation and providing recognition for staff who achieve excellence in customer service. Parallel to this, the training department demonstrated excellent service standards to the staff, their internal customers, in the development of these awards. Of paramount importance was the cost effectiveness of the programme. Plans for the future involve the development of the Tailored Awards to provide opportunities for both the hotel and others in the industry.

Finalist - The Tontine Hotel Greenock
With 35 full-time employees and 17 part-time employees, the Tontine Hotel involves all staff in training. Over 14 years of trading the appraisal system has been developed and improved taking on board feedback from previous Thistle Awards entries. Efforts in constructing a business plan and a training and development plan have been commended, and it should be recognised that although the Tontine falls within the criteria of the large Company Training award, it is a relatively small independent hotel. They have achieved a great deal without the support a larger organisation is able to provide and they demonstrate commitment and ambition in striving to develop the business of the hotel continuously through the development of its staff.
