Scottish Seabird Centre

The Green Tourism Business Scheme
How the Scottish Seabird Centre has benefitted

The Scottish Seabird Centre is an award winning wildlife visitor centre where visitors enjoy a close encounter with nature from a stunning location overlooking the Firth of Forth.

Since opening in May 2000 the centre has had a strong ecological agenda including using a solar power system, and natural light, ventilation and materials where possible. Tom Brock, Chief Executive, is a supporter of the Green Tourism Business Scheme and realises its potential as an extremely effective business tool.

‘The award has significantly raised our profile with visitors and customers as an environmentally and socially responsible organisation that practices what it preaches. We are now finding that an increasing number of tourists are choosing attractions that can demonstrate environmental responsibility’.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme has enabled the Scottish Seabird Centre to advance their green ethos whilst delivering real financial benefits. ‘Using the scheme, we have examined every area of our operation, from energy consumption to marketing – for example, we now use solar power on the Bass Rock for our interactive wildlife cameras and we operate a joint marketing and ticket initiative with ScotRail to encourage sustainable transport to North Berwick. We have implemented a wide range of improvements that help us to save money and promote the centre – this approach is now part of our culture.’

‘Over 30% of GTBS members can demonstrate that they have increased their profits as a direct result of joining the scheme’
