This bedroom has a double bed, restrictions between the beds and furniture 1400mm on the long side of the bed and 1390mm at the base.

Access is limited to 970mm between furniture on entering the room


An alternative additional size of 2250mm x 2100mm is preferred allowing for a mobile hoist to turn 180 degrees.

Window cill height is approximately 1100mm from floor level. The curtains are operated by the means of a curtain pull cord.

Alternatively the management can provide a service in opening and closing the curtain at the start and close of each day.  


Recommended that in disabled designed accommodation that the windows are designed as to allow a clear and uninterrupted view from cills and transoms etc.

T.V. shelf and tea making facility has limited knee space below the shelf and of a height of 900mm. The T.V has a remote control.


Recommended that in a disabled room that a range of heights are provided for counters, shelving and tables for the use of both wheelchair and limited mobility users, 760mm for wheelchair, and 900mm for others.

Bedside tables are movable as with the bedside lamps, however lamps are controlled from the lamp rather than a switch on the cord.


Bed lights have limited access from the prone position on either side of a double bed.

The wardrobe is fitted with a 180-degree swing door. Adequate space is provided in front of the wardrobe. The hanging rail height is 1600mm with a shelf above.


Hanging rail preferred set a two heights (high and low) 725mm & 1600mm.

The overall wall to wall size of the bathroom is below the BS 8300. A standard height wash hand basin and W.C. have been fitted.

No grab rails have been fitted. Tap heads are round and limited use by those with limited dexterity.

The recommended shower area and bathroom for independent wheelchair user is a minimum of 2400mm x 2500mm, this includes the showering area, W.C. & whb.

The electric shower isolating pull cord if approx. 1700mm from floor level. The standard WC requires the flush handle on the transfer side of the cistern. 1 L
The electric shower-isolating switch is at a height of 800mm. - - -
Ceramic tiled flooring, little slip-resistance when wet. Limited tonal contrast to walls and skirting etc. Recommended flooring change to reduce the potential slip hazard. 1 L

Shower cubicle is off the bathroom area and of limited size 800mm wide x 745mm deep. Doors to the shower cubicle are inward opening bi-fold giving a very limited access approx. (350mm).

With stepped access of approx. 270mm.  Lighting within the cubicle is poor. No grab rails are fitted within the cubicle or in the surrounding area as to allow ease of access on entering.

The existing cubicle, both in size and access gives very limited use for those with mobility restrictions and allows no access to wheelchair users.

Careful re-design of the entire bathroom and shower layout is required as to give even a mobility standard of service. See attached example from the British Standard 8300:2001.
