Legal Rights?

Legislation

Employment Law is very complex. Your local Job Centre can supply a series of booklets on different aspects of the law. If you have a problem, then the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service runs a free, confidential service.

Even if you employ someone for just one hour a week, they have certain rights under current employment legislation. These include:

  • written details of their terms of employment within 8 weeks of starting.
  • time off in certain circumstances, such as maternity leave.
  • continued employment if the business changes hands.
  • the right to join a trade union.
  • fair treatment on the grounds of race and gender.
  • redundancy pay if they are made redundant after 2 years in your employment.
