Country Sports Report
In 2004 the group commissioned a research project on the Scottish country sports tourism market. This would provide the statistical information on which future CSTG activities and projects would be based. The research project had the following objectives:

  • To gather information on country sports tourists – origin, demographics, information and bookings, trip characteristics, product satisfaction
  • To investigate the perceptions and attitudes of intermediaries
  • To identify participation trends at UK and International levels
  • To identify leading destinations and examples of best practice
  • To assess Scotland’s strengths and weaknesses as a destination for country sports tourism

Key Results
Some of the key results of the survey include:

  • At the moment about 80% of people participating in country sports in Scotland have more than 20 years experience.
  • 58% of survey participants stayed in Scotland for more than 4 nights on their trip whilst 42% stayed for between 1 and 3 nights.
  • 63% said country sports was the only purpose of their trip and only 4% said it was not the main purpose.
  • Most people are taking part in country sports in the Scottish Highlands (36%), whilst 26% are participating in the South of Scotland and 24% in the Central region.
  • 69% of survey respondents get the information they need to participate from friends; 10% got their information from agents and 8% from magazines and other journals.
  • When it comes to booking the sport the most frequently used method is to deal directly with the estate/provider (37%;) 14% book their sport through their accommodation and 4% are booking it through the internet.
  • Of the respondents who shot pheasants (22% of the total surveyed population) nearly 25% of them also played golf during their trip.
  • Approx. 6.5 million hunters in Europe (2%) of the population. Most from France, Spain, Italy, GB, Germany
