There are 22 local enterprise companies (LECs) operating throughout Scotland.
LECs have particular responsibility for supporting local businesses or individuals (and in the case of the Highlands and Islands, community or voluntary groups) in:-
- Business Development
Help with business planning, marketing advice, financial help for product development and quality improvement. - Skills Development
Support for individual or company training and delivery of specialist tourism training programmes. - Environmental Improvements
Investing in landscape enhancements both within industrial areas and in areas of scenic potential, or of environmental significance.

The extent to which each LEC area''s economy depends on tourism, or on help for business development, will vary. Each LEC has a tourism development brief to fulfil, and they have an important role to play in delivering management and training initiatives like Investors in People (IIP), Scotland's Best, Welcome Host and Conference Care.
Each LEC collaborates closely with the tourism industry in their area, with their respective VisitScotland Network Offices and with Local Authorities. The LEC''s contact with VisitScotland tends to be channelled through either Highlands & Islands Enterprise or Scottish Enterprise.
