Aims The Historic Houses Association is a national organisation which represents the interests of the privately-owned historic houses, castles and gardens throughout Britain. Of these, 240 are in Scotland, of which 42 open regularly to the public. (Compare this to 17 similar properties owned by the National Trust for Scotland and 20 by Historic Scotland) representing a substantial element of Scotland''s heritage tourist attractions.

These include such well-known properties as Hopetoun, Traquair, Glamis and Dunvegan and many smaller but equally important properties. Many of these houses are surrounded by gardens, some of national importance and many of the houses contain outstanding art collections.

As well as welcoming day visitors, these properties take part in a broad range of corporate, commercial and retail enterprises, making a substantial contribution to the Scottish tourist industry.

HHA member properties are individualistic and are made more interesting by being owned and lived in by the families who built them and have often contributed much to Scotland''s history.
