In 2002 a series of benchmarking studies were undertaken by Director of the Moffat Centre for Travel and Tourism Business Development at Glasgow Caledonian University, Professor John Lennon. The purpose of the benchmark study was:
- To provide competitive analysis of best practice countries
- To understand the strategic implications for Scotland
- To appreciate the lessons to be learned from studying best practice
- To summarise key findings for Scottish tourism industry sectors
